The Olympics in China

Scientists at the US Olympic Training Center are currently trying to devise ways for athletes to train/perform more productively in the upcoming Olympics in Beijing. The problem for the athletes is the thick pollution that hovers over the city. Air quality in Beijing can register as high as five times above the World Health Organization's standard for safety. The scientists and trainers are fearful that the pollution may cause or exacerbate the breathing problems some athletes face. Chinese officials have been stressing that the pollution will not be a problem when the Olympic Games start. The officials plan to make many changes in order to ensure that pollution will be minimized, from limiting vehicle use to temporarily closing factories. However, with the Games only a few months away, scientists are not sure that there will be enough time for generating those clearer skies in Beijing. In fact, scientists are stressing to athletes that they train elsewhere and arrive in Beijing at the very last moment for competing in their sport.

It is true that China is changing their view on democracy. The local government elections are quasi-democratic and the grassroots politics at the local level is surprising considering China's past. However, China has had a chance within the last few years to let the Taiwan situation simmer but instead, they pushed more forcefully for reunification.

I've only recently started to hear about the pollution problem in Beijing in regard to the upcoming Olympics. I was curious as to how it compared to the air quality in Los Angeles during the 1984 games. I've competed in several long distance races, including one marathon, and during the few times that I've visted L.A., I always thought that it would be a terrible place to train & compete in those types of events because of the terrible air quality.
I found several articles related to this issue. I've posted a link to one of them that talks about the efforts by U.S. scientists and atheletes to prepare for the polluted environment in Beijing.

China hosting the olympics is a step towards democracy and is a way for China to show its economic success. The olympics will give other people of different nationalities the opprotunity to see how the Chinese society functions. As to the air quality issue , its not like some athletes will have a huge advantage over others, aren't they all breathing the same air?
