shooting down spy satellite

Apparently within a few weeks the U.S. military plans to shoot down a damaged spy satellite before it hits the earth. The reasoning behind the tactic is the toxic fumes the satellite will emit upon contact, which could potentially kill people. China first expressed disagreement with our military's actions and now Russia is also protesting. China's reasoning is that the U.S. should not interfere with security systems in outer space. Russia, however, feels that U.S. military is hiding behind the fact that they simply wish to test their missile system.

It's interesting that the U.S. is being accused of carrying out some sort of secret missile test in plain site, by some of the same people who have demonized U.S. foreign policy as being arrogant and militarily hostile in recent years. Such a hostile nation, with such blatant disregard for global public opinion should have no problem carrying out a missile defense test without creating a false pretense, like a broken satellite, for doing so.
We carried out multiple ballistic missile defense system tests over the Pacific throughout the 1990’s, and called them ‘ballistic missile defense system tests’. Why would an arrogant government be so concerned with veiling a similar test under any sort of false pretense?
Decide for myself? I decide that it looks like critics of this operation want to have it both ways; they certainly expect the U.S. to do something to avert this potential danger, but they reserve the right to label the U.S. as an aggressor if we do. It appears very transparent and hypocritical to me.

I think it's a good idea. I probably wouldn't put much stock in the explanation that the US just wants to protect us from an ailing satellite. I do believe it sends a pretty clear message of the US military's ability.
