Beijing pollution "not a real danger"

Olympic chief has said that the pollution in Beijing is not going to harm the athletes who will be arriving in China for the Olympics. He said that some of them might have a "slightly reduced performance" but overall they will not be harmed. If I'm there to compete, I wouldn't want to run the risk of being the few who perform at a slightly reduced level! I want to be able to give it my all but I guess the Olympic chief doesn't think thats a big deal.

The whole purpose of the Olympics is supposed to be the best of the best. So the fact that he even said that is completely ridiculous.

Aside from the irony of the Olympic cheif's comment, I find it hard to beleive the pollution will not harm the athletes. As discussed in class, the "fresh" air in Beijing is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. This will most definitley cause damage to athletes who, obviously, are not used to inhaling toxic fumes from either cigarettes or fossil fuels.

The fact is, it was widely apparent that the air in Beijing was less than average. This is just one of many items that should have been taken into consideration before approving China's bid for the Olympics.
